KAMAKURA/EARLY MUROMACHI PERIOD, ATTRIBUTED TO THE NAOE SHIZU GROUP


Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 5 rin (66.8 cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.1 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 0.8 cm.; carving (horimono): kakitoshi futatsuji-bi (two slender grooves extending through the nakago) on both sides.
Forging pattern (jihada): open wood grain (itame) mixed with some burl (mokume).
Tempering pattern (hamon): irregular patterns (midare) in nie and with a remarkably strong sunagashi filling the full depth of the tempered area and the entire length of the blade.
Point (boshi): brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): shortened (suriage) and with more contemporary filing near the nakago-jiri which has also been snapped off; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): broken off; holes (mekugi-ana): two (plus a fragment of the jiri; signature (mei): none (mumei). [Some very light, superficial scratches; when fitted into the Gunto mounts, the very end of the nakago was broken off and the surrounding area was filed.]
