MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1470), SIGNED BISHU OSAFUNE KATSUMITSU

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 bu (61.4 cm.);curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.7 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): compacted and well-arranged wood grain (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): extremely active small irregular patterns (komidare) with areas of small clove clusters (kochoji) and profuse activity of 'rootlets' in normal, small and slanted shapes (ashi, ko-ashi, saka-ashi), some quite deep and intersperced with 'leaves' (yo), all in good ko-nie; a meandering kage-utsuri above.
Point (boshi): brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): Bizen, slightly curved, ubu and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei), katana-mei: Bishu Osafune Kagemitsu. [Some surface rubbing and scratches, especially in the kissaki; there are a few, small nicks in the hasaki, especially in the monouchi and kissaki.]
