THE DAI: DATED EISHO 8 (1511), SIGNED BIZEN (NO) KUNI (NO) JU OSAFUNE SUKESADA. THE SHO: MUROMACHI PERIOD (PROBABLY MID-16TH CENTURY), SIGNED MASAIE, PROBABLY BINGO MIHARA
DAI:Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 9 sun, 7.5 bu (59.7 cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.7 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 0.9 cm.
outside (omote): very fine, compact wood grain (koitame).
Forging pattern (jihada): medium suguba with areas of extremely fine 'brushed' tempering (hotsure), a few very small 'rootlets' (ko-ashi) and small areas of double tempering (nijuba), all executed in nioi and ko-nie; some areas of shadowy midare utsuri.
Point (boshi): small rounded (ko-maru) with moderate turn-back.
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): Bizen, very slightly suriage and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): three; signature (mei), katana-mei: Bizen (no) Kuni (no) ju Osafune Sukesada; date (jidai): Eisho 8-nen 2-gatsu hi (a day in the 2nd month of Eisho 8 [1511]).
[A few, very minor scratches near the machi.]
SHO: Configuration (sugata): nagamaki with shallow peaked back (iori-mune); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 3 sun, 5 bu (40.8 cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.0 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): wood grain (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium suguba in nioi and ko-nie; in the lower 2/3 the hamon displays extremely fine irregularities like komidare, but smaller as well as some shallow 'rootlets' (ashi), but in the uppermost 1/3, the irregularities disappear and are replaced with a very sharp, bright habuchi.
Point (boshi): roughly pointed, with a moderate turn-back and scattered tempering along the back (muneyaki).
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): rounded bottom, ubu and with a moist, brown patina; end (nakagojiri): sloping (sujikai); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (mei), katana-mei: Masaie. [A small rust stain on the ura shinogi and an area of rust stains and scratches along the omote shinogi-ji.]
Daisho koshirae comprising: wakasa-nuri saya; a pair of iron Namban tsuba pierced with dragons, tama and arabesque foliage and with gold nunome highlights, unsigned; tan-wrapped [some breaks] tsuka fitted with a pair of shakudo and gold Goto style menuki in the form of bundles of grasses and kiku; the dai shakudo nanako fuchi-kashira are decorated with kiku beside cottages, unsigned, 18th Century; the sho is fitted with a lacquer kashira and a shakudo ishime fuchi molded with pine, hills and a cottage, unsigned; a shakudo nanako kozuka in Goto style and applied with shakudo and gold aoi leaves and flowers, unsigned, probably early 17th Century---length of koshirae 91.5, 62 cm., length of tsuka 24.8, 16 cm., diameter of tsuba 7.4, 7.2; length of kozuka 9.8 cm.
