MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1550), SIGNED BISHU OSAFUNE SUKESADA SAKU

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 6.5 bu (62.5 cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 2.1 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): tightly compacted wood grain (koitame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium suguba in ko-nie with numerous scattered 'brushed' areas (hotsure).
Point (boshi): brush tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): Bizen, ubu and with a dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana):holes (mekugi-ana): one (double); signature (mei), katana-mei: Bishu Osafune Sukesada saku. [Surface very slightly rubbed and 'foggy'; a few small scrapes to the hasaki in the boshi.]

Katana koshirae comprising: a black lacquer saya [some chips and dents]; cast yamagane tsuba; black-wrapped tsuka fitted with Goto style shakudo and gold menuki of kaki; iron fuchi-kashira molded with prunus, unsigned.--length of koshirae 91 cm., length of tsuka 24.3 cm., height of tsuba 7.2 cm.
