EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650), SIGNED MINAMOTO KANESHIGE
Configuration (sugata): kissakimoroha-zukuri (the longitudinal ridge line begins at mid-point on the back of the blade and continues parallel to the cutting edge, meeting it at the point; from the same mid-point, the back of the blade is thinned to take a cutting edge and is so tempered) with shallow peaked back (iori-mune); length (nagasa): 5 sun, 5.9 bu (16.8 cm.); carving (horimono): inside (ura): goma-bashi; outside (omote): Koshi-hi ni Soe-hi.
Forging pattern (jihada): wood grain (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): shallow, irregular invections (kogonome) in nioi and nie with good 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and small 'rootlets' (ko-ashi).
Point (boshi): brushed tip (hakikake) with turn-back extending the majority of the mune hasaki.
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): tapering, ubu and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei), katana-mei: Minamoto Kaneshige. [Old rust stain on the hasaki 3 cm. from the kissaki.]
Aikuchi-koshirae comprising: a finely fluted black lacquer saya; all mounts (o-kojiri, kurikata, wari-kogai, o-koiguchi, kashira and mekugi) are silver and deeply carved with crashing waves, unsigned, circa 1800---length of koshirae 27.4 cm. [A few minor cracks and scratches to the lacquer.]
