DATED MEIJI 3 (1870), SIGNED BISHU OSAFUNE (NO) JU SUKETADA
Configuration (sugata): of flat, wedge section (hira-zukuri) with shallow peaked back (iori-mune); length (nagasa): 6 sun, 1 bu (18.5 cm.).
Forging pattern (jihada): an extremely compact and well-configured wood grain (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): springing from a a medium yaki-dashi, a series of multiple groupings of clove patterns (juka-choji) executed in ko-nie.
Point (boshi): Jizo kaeri yoru (Jizo-headed with a slight dip in the turn-back).
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): Bizen, ubu and with a dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): katte-sagari; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei), katana-mei: Bishu Osafune (no) ju Suketada; date (jidai): Meiji 3-nen 2-gatsu hi (a day in the 2nd month of Meiji 3 [1870]). [Condition OK.]
Accompanied by a Tokubetsu Kicho Token certificate, no. 5504022, Showa 55 (1980), issued by the N.B.T.H.K.

Aikuchi koshirae comprising: an aogai nashiji saya; full silver mounts (fuchi-kashira, koiguchi, kurikata, kojiri, wari-kogai, kozuka, uragawara) deeply carved with crashing waves, in the style of Ogawa Sorin, unsigned, early 19th Century; the green-wrapped tsuka is set with a pair of gold , silver and shakudo menuki in the form of a crescent moon and a sun with clouds, signed Morichika and -----------Kodo.---length of koshirae 31.4 cm., length of tsuka 9.4 cm., length of wari-kogai 13.4 cm., length of kozuka 6.7 cm. [Condition OK.]
