DATED 1978, SIGNED YATSUKUWA YASUTAKE SAKU
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 5 sun, 9 bu (80.1 cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 2.7 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): extremely tightly compacted straight grain (masame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium suguba with extensively scattered and extremely small irregular patterns (ko-midare), intermixed with very small 'rootlets' (ko-ashi) and some 'leaves' (yo), together with some 'brushed' areas (hotsure), all executed in bright nioi and ko-nie.
Point (boshi): small rounded (ko-maru) with almost no return.
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): slender, slightly uplifted, ubu and with a clean surface; end (nakagojiri): iri-yamagata; file marks (yasurime): kesho; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei), tachi-mei: Yatsukuwa Yasutake saku and Tomuki Anan (no) motome ni oji. (To the order of Tomuki Anan [Tom Buchanan?].); date (jidai): Showa 53-nen 8-gatsu kichi-nichi (an auspicious day in the 8th month of Showa 53 [1978]) and Gyonen nana-ju sai (an old man in his 70th year). [Condition fine; two small, superficial rubbed spots.]
