A RIMPA STYLE RYOSHIBAKO
EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)

The large, rectangular box with slightly domed cover lacquered in Rimpa style with large, flat leaves and small balloon flowers on a roiro-nuri ground, the leaves rendered in gold hiramaki-e, pewter inlay and mother of pearl inlay, the stems gold lacquer brushed with brown lacquer and the smaller blossoms matching, the large leaves continued on the sides of the box and the interior similar, with inlaid pewter, gold lacquer and aogai blossoms and leaves, all of very large size and covering the inside of the lid and well of the box- 16 x 13 x 5 1/2 in. (40.8 x 33.2 x 13.2 cm.), surface nicks, cracks, some damages restored
