A SOFT METAL PIPE AND TOBACCO POUCH SET
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), PIPE SIGNED MASATSUNE

The thick pipe composed of soft metal tip and bowl ends joined by a middle cylinder of bamboo, each end of shibuichi with details of gilt and silver worked in takazogan with a lakeside shrine complex nestled in the hills and under the moon, the pipe enclosed in a leather case which attaches to a matching leather pouch fitted with a large rectangular ivory clasp carved in low relief with a landscape and applied with a gilt and shakudo oxherd and ox, the underside of the plaque engraved with a rake and basket of flowers and signed Shigeyuki with kakihan, the pouch suspended from three hinged shakudo, gilt and copper plaques of seaside huts on the face and of carved ivory plaques applied with a gilt, copper and shakudo bird on the reverse, these in turn suspended from a large ivory kagamibuto netsuke carved on the reverse with a landscape and on the edges with fretwork and fitted with a rectangular shakudo and gilt landscape within a gilt iron narrow border- pipe 8 3/4 in. (22.2 cm.) long, pouch suspended from netsuke 8 7/8 in. (22.8 cm.) (2)
