Kurihara Keiko was born in Ibaragi Prefecture. In 1958 she graduated from Joshi Bijutsu Daigaku (Womens' Art College) in the Western-style painting division. Beginning in 1960 she went to work for the art department of Nihon Broadcasting, while painting and exhibiting her works. Her first solo exhibition was at the Ginza Muramatsu Gallery. In 1967 she won the 52nd Nikaten award, and in 1974 became a member of the Nikakai to which she still belongs. Kurihara has had numerous one person exhibitions in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. During the first ten years of her professional career she painted mostly landscapes, turning thereafter to portraits of nude women, as offered here. These paintings are noteworthy for their exceptional clarity and refinement, key elements are the sharp contrast between figure and ground, and sleek surfaces of skillfully applied oil paint.
