Lot Essay

These figures are clearly inspired by the set of gilded sandstone figures of Chinese musicians by Benkert and Heymuller for Frederick the Great's Chinese tea-house at Sans Souci, Potsdam, circa 1757 (see D. Jacobson, Chinoiserie, 1993, pp. 92-93).
