Lot Essay

The sinuous outline of this elegant bureau-cabinet, and in particular the delicately carved apron with its distinctive central foot, relates to the work of cabinet-makers such as Peter Schuss and Johann Philipp Raab from the Mainz region. More elaborate versions of this type of Mainz cabinet, but retaining the same essential characteristics, are illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Künst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1970, vol.II, figs.1029-1034.
