These candlesticks are derived from a design by Jean Demosthène Dugourc dated 1790 (Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris) subsequently executed by Pierre Gouthière. (see P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1987, p. 294). A very similar pair of candlesticks delivered to Marie Antoinette for her cabinet de la Méridienne at Versailles by Claude-Jean Pitoin in 1781 is now in the Wallace Collection (ibid. p. 38).
