Lot Essay
Henry Dasson (1825-1896), recorded as having worked at 106 Rue Vielle-du-Temple. He specialized in reproductions in the style of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI, as well as pastiches of these periods. He purchased the firm of Charles Winkleson upon his death in 1870, thus raising the quality of bronze workmanship to a competetive level in the Paris Exhibitions.
The original of this cabinet now resides in the Hermitage, Leningrad, being sold from the de la Reynie collection in 1797, and again later in the Cheremetev (see Alexander Pradère, Les Ebenistes Français de Louis XIV à la Revolution, fig. 39). The original cabinet is placed on a late 18th Century base.
