Lot Essay

Designed in 1904 and officially named 'The Atlantic', this train ran the evening express on the Great Central Railway from Marylebone to Bradford until 1936. With its unusually large engines, the train was sarcastically nicknamed the 'Jersey Lily' after a fat woman who appeared in a local public house near Gorton Works. The nickname makes a play on the actress of the day, Lily Langtry.
