Relief bazaars such as the one commemorated as this jug were common fund raisers following the Civil War. In this particular example, moneys were most likely being raised to benefit either the Confederate Soldiers Home outside Baltimore (Pikesville, Md.), a 19th century prototype for today's VA Hospitals, or to raise money for a Confederate monument either in Maryland or at a specific battlesite.
