Tiffany's pattern book records this piece, no. 4523, on March 16, 1893, under Pitcher Gourd, 50.4 ounces. It is recorded as ...Chsg. Bananas etc Cactus, Special. It cost $700 to manufacture; while the other versions cost between $50 to $480.

This pitcher appears to be the example illustrated in Tiffany's archival photograph of a display at the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893. It is described in their Exposition catalogue as no. 28 as "TROPICAL PITCHER, mounted and chased with cactus, banana, and other tropical plants."
A closely related tankard bearing Tiffany's 1893 Exposition mark was sold Christie's, October 10, 1987, lot 32.
