Further details
Jewelry of sentiment flourished throughout the nineteenth century. At mid century, hair of a loved one was woven into jewelry shapes such as bracelets or earrings. Later, this fashion fell out of favor and hair was placed in small compartments on the underside of brooches, pendants or bracelets. On the illustrated example, each of the nine compartments is decorated with a monogram, most likely initials of children from one family. The superior workmanship on this bracelet indicates that it was probably made for a member of the social elite.
