RELATED LITERATURE:
J.R. Brown and E.W. Lee, Alfred Thompson Bricher 1837-1908, Indianapolis, 1973, pp. 16-17, fig. 2, illus.
In the early summer of 1866, Bricher travelled on the upper Mississippi River. He kept a sketchbook during this period and several views of this site were included. One, dated June 2, 1866, is illustrated in Brown and Lee's catalogue Alfred Thompson Bricher. This canvas, probably painted during that year, was perhaps a preliminary study for the artist's major oil entitled The Side-Wheeler "The City of St. Paul" on the Mississippi River, Dubuque Iowa, painted in 1872 and sold at auction in 1981. J.H. Reed, who acquired both paintings from the artist, was a dry goods merchant in Dubuque.
