According to Jane Wyeth, who maintains the artist's archives, these drawings were executed in 1965 as studies for the oil Portrait of Lincoln Kirstein, now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C. That oil was exhibited in the artist's first gallery exhibition, held in 1966 at M. Knoedler & Co., Inc., New York, and titled First Exhibition/James Wyeth/Paintings.
