FIRST EDITION of Cellini's important treatise on gold, sculpture and metal-casting. In addition to outlining his own and other artists' techniques, Cellini provides much information on specific commissions which he undertook and on his dealings with various artists of the time. In particular, his relationship with Michelangelo, of which he was immensely proud, is mentioned on numerous occasions. Cellini discusses at length the difficulties he faced in creating his famous bronze sculpture of Perseus and Medusa, commissioned for the Loggia dei Lanzi by Cosimo de' Medici, father of the book's dedicatee. Sonnets written by Agnolo Bronzino, Benedetto Varchi and others celebrating the monumental sculpture are at the end of the volume. (See also lot 52 for an incunable edition from Bronzino's library.)
