HOMER. [Works, in Greek, Vol. II:] Vlyssea. Batrachomyomachia. Hymni.xxxii [With Vitae Homeri, in Greek]. Venice: Andreas Torresanus at the Aldine Press, June 1517.

Aldine 8° (150 x 87 mm). Vol. II only. Collation: a-z A-H8 I4 (Odyssey); 1-78 (Lives of Homer from Herodotus, Plutarch and Dio Chrysostom). 178 leaves. Greek type, author's preface in italic, colophon and register for both vols. on L4r, woodcut anchor device on title and L4v, initial spaces with guide letters. (Small repairs to title-leaf, a3, and last 4 leaves, very light occasional dampstain to upper blank margin, the Vitae with a few headlines shaved and marginal spotting from washed inscriptions.) 18th-century Scottish (?) red morocco gilt, covers gilt to a double lozenge design incorporating drawer-handle, leaf and flower, and tools representing snakes or worms, spine gilt in six compartments, two lettered in gilt with title in Greek, edges and turn-ins gilt, green Dutch-gilt pastepaper endleaves (joints repaired, spine faded).

Provenance: a few discreet corrections and marginalia in a small neat early hand, list of Latin names at the end of the Odyssey (D5v) in the same hand.

Second Aldine edition, rarer than the first, and seldom found complete. "Meilleure et plus rare encore que celle de 1504, qui lui a servi de base, elle est surtout bien plus correcte que celle de 1524" (Renouard).
