LUDOVICUS Imolensis. Oratio ad populum Bononiensem. [Bologna: Franciscus (Plato) de Benedictis, 1494].
Chancery 4° (200 x 141 mm). Collation: [1]4 (1/1r text). 4 leaves. 39-44 lines. Type 2:80R. 2-, 3- and 4-line initial spaces, the first two with printed guide-letters. (Expertly rehinged.) Modern vellum wrapper.
First and only edition of a public oration delivered to the people of Bologna by Lodovico of Imola, Franciscan professor of theology, on the occasion of the General Council of Friars Minor convening in Bologna in 1494. Lodovico devotes much of his text to outlining the proud history of Bologna, citing classical authors, discussing the origin of its name, its Etruscan history, and the invasion of Frederick Barbarossa in the twelfth century. He finishes with a laudatory history of the Bentivoglios, who ruled Bologna throughout the 15th century and who clearly acted as hosts to the Franciscans meeting there in 1494.
The setting varies slightly from BMC, for instance: 1/1r line 4 "...maluissem...", and 1/4v line 43 "...Sed in euum sempiternum Deo continue protegente duret...".
HCR 9165; BMC VI, 827 (IA. 28926); CIBN L-286; Pellechet Ms 7351; Goff L-373.
