MAYNO, Jason de (1435-1519). Epithalamion in nuptiis Maximiliani et Blancae Mariae. [Milan: Leonardus Pachel, after 8 April 1494].
Chancery 4° (200 x 140 mm). Collation: a10 (a1r 5-line heading printed in red, text, a10r laudatory address on Mayno by Cardinal Raimondo of Correse dated 8 April 1494). 10 leaves. 30 lines, shoulder notes. Types 3:111R, 10:83R. Small woodcut ornamental initials. (Very light dampstain at lower margin, shoulder notes slightly shaved.) Modern half vellum over pasteboard.
FIRST EDITION of an oration on the marriage of Emperor Maximilian I and Bianca Maria Sforza at Innsbruck on 16 March 1494. The marriage forged an important political union. Maximilian was in need of allies against the military progress of Charles VIII, king of France. Thus, Maximilian gained an ally and a significant dowry, and in return Bianca Maria's uncle, Lodovico Sforza (il Moro) was granted imperial recognition as duke of Milan, thereby legitimizing the Sforzas in that title. Jason de Mayno was a highly regarded jurist, among whose many published works was a tract on marriage law. Only shortly before the publication of the present marriage oration, Mayno had delivered a pledge of obedience to the newly elected pope Alexander VI on behalf of the Duke of Milan; Mayno refers to that address here. The epithalamium bestows fulsome praise not only on Maximilian but also on Lodovico il Moro, here often referred to as "divus Ludovicus".
RARE, no copy in America and only one in England.
C 3941; BMC VI, 781 (IA. 26677); IGI 6024.
