FIRST EDITION. Merula was invited to Milan by Lodovico Sforza to write a history of the Visconti as part of Lodovico's strategy to gain imperial recognition for the Sforzas as dukes of Milan. By emphasizing his kinship with the Visconti, his maternal ancestors, Lodovico hoped to establish the legitimacy of the Sforzas as successors to the Visconti (see G. Ianziti, Humanistic Historiography under the Sforzas, 1988).

This book is sometimes erroneously dated after 1500 owing to the author's dedication to Otto Visconti, in which he refers to the second occupation of Milan by the French in April 1500. As noted in BMC (reprint), however, the two leaves containing the dedication consist of a single bifolium inserted into the first quire, no doubt added in light of the new political circumstances in Milan. In a letter by Girolamo Morone dated 31 December 1499 this work is mentioned as recently printed (BMC reprint). Guillermus Le Signerre and his brother were also active at this date in Saluzzo.

Folio a2r, line 3 has been corrected to "ANTIQUITATIS".
