Lot Essay

Founded by Alvin Jewell in 1852, A.L. Jewell and Company was one of the earliest commercial weathervane-manufacturers in Massachusetts and is thought to have been the first weathervane-retailer to have published a catalogue of his designs in that state. A nearly identical horse weathervane stamped A.L. Jewell & Co. was sold in these Rooms, October 19, 1990, lot 170.
