A ROSEWOOD AND GILD-DECORATED EBONIZED AND MARQUETRY INLAID NEO-GREC CENTER TABLE
Attributed to Herter Brothers (1865-1905), New York City, circa 1872-1873
The oval top with inlaid marquetry edge in green and brown stylized flowers and arabesques on a blond ground above a conforming molded edge over a straight sided apron embellished with alternating panels and incised rosewood and marquetry decoration and headed at each quadrant with applied carved floral bosses above shaped urn and reeded flaring cylinder-turned legs surrounded by a similar larger urn and reeded cylindrical central support, all on a carved and pierced beaded and scrolled oval base on four faceted and incised stepped-disc feet
28½in. high, 37¾in. wide, 30 1/8in. deep

Lot Essay

A carved, inlaid and gilt-decorated Renaissance Revival cabinet made circa 1872-1873 and related to a similar labelled Herter form is embellished with identical green and brown volute and leaf marquetry. This cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Howe, et al, Herter Brothers: Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age (Houston, 1994) p. 162, fig. 17.
