Hine began his work for the National Child Labor Committee in 1907. Over the next ten years he traveled throughout the East, photographing the hardships of child labor as well as tenement and slum life. By 1909, he had produced over eight hundred photographs which appeared in newspapers and in publications, posters and publicity for the NCLC. During this time he also prepared slides, loaned in sets of fifty to seventy five, to accompany a lecture by the Secretary of the New England Committee, E.V. Lord. Hine gave slide-illustrated lectures from 1913 until 1917, while continuing his investigations of child labor travesties. He terminated his association with the NCLC in 1918.
