Lot Essay

A favored subject of Weegee's pictures, the rent parties he photographed are some of his liveliest. Appealing to Weegee's sense of humor, these photographs mimic the fascination the 1950's public had with space travel made popular by Hollyood science fiction and comic books. Suzanne Johnston writes of the pictures, "...they are either dreaming of flying into outer space or, as in Boy Meets Girl at the Astor, being swept into high society. Each is glimpsed at that heightened moment which absorbs both man and woman, and Weegee's photographs boldly capture the style and the pleasure that the participants were feeling in their celebrations."
