Lot Essay

This scene was photographed in three different known versions with each negative bearing close resemblance to each other. Each portrays the mechanic in slightly different poses in relation to the capped turbine with which he is engaged. The exact date of the negative is not known - it has been variously dated from 1921 to 1925 in different sources. Two versions of the image are well known perhaps due to the references cited here.

The version offered here is the rarest of the three. Outside of the two prints in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, and one in private hands, it is the only other known print from this series on this paper with its characteristic "chocolate" tone. There are approximately 20 prints on this paper in the Metropolitan's collection, the majority donated to the museum in 1954.
