D'Aubigné's Histoire, published at the author's expense, is a biting chronicle of the history of France between 1550 and 1601 focussing particularly on the struggles of the Calvinists. It was condemned to be burned soon after the appearance of the third volume, and the author, who had published the work at his own expense, was forced to take refuge in Geneva. Only a handful of copies escaped the execution of the sentence.
