A WOOD FIGURE OF FUDO MYO-O
MUROMACHI PERIOD (15TH CENTURY)
Standing in long robes falling in regular pleats at the waist and in a long, flowing skirt gathered in a knot below the waist, the right arm bent and holding the detachable sword and the left arm held slightly bent at the side, the fingers clasped to hold the rope, now missing, the head, like the arms and feet, separately carved and fitted into the body at the neck in a serrated line to form a necklace below the rippled neck folds, the face carved in a fierce expression framed by high, elaborate coiffure ending in thick locks at the shoulder and by long, pendant ears, with one earring, the reverse of the figure carved with the robe falling in wide, even pleats at the waist, natural wood base- 35 3/4 in. (90.7 cm.) high excluding base, traces of polychrome lacquer, old breaks and losses, limbs and sword replaced
