Lot Essay

'The Mocking of Christ, The Flagellation' and 'The Road to Calvary' derive from Trevisani's decorations for the six lateral chapels of S. Silvestre in Capite, Rome. Painted between 1695 and 1696 and commissioned and paid for by the Franciscan Sisters of Santa Charita (see F.R. DiFederico, Francesco Trevisani, Eighteenth Century-Painter in Rome, A Catalogue Raisonne, 1977, pp. 42-44, no's 11-13, illustrated). 'The Agony in the Garden' does not appear to follow a known composition by the artist.

An attribution to Januarius Zick has been suggested
