An old inscription adhered to the relining canvas reads 'N^r 930 collezzione particolare del principe elettorale di Bavièra/Pittore Robusti Jacopo **** Tintoretto'

A drawn modello for the present lot, measuring 470 x 325 mm, was formerly with the Matthiesen Gallery, London and subsequently sold at Sotheby's London, 21 Oct. 1963, lot 93 (see A. Morassi, Guardi, Tutti I Disegni, 1975, p. 102, no. 128, fig. 129 'Il disegno appartiene al gruppo, molto tardo e drammatica - mente 'expressionista', delle composizione di Francesco Guardi con anelogo soggetto. Opera Capitale nel suo genere').

Two other Pietàs by Francesco Guardi are known, in private collections in Milan and Bergamo (see A. Morassi, Guardi, 1973, I, p. 342, nos. 180-81, and II, figs. 205-06). There is a drawn modello for the first in the Museo Correr (op. cit., 1975, p. 102, no. 126, fig. 130). Morassi describes the Milan painting as 'Il dipinto, di un parossimo formale e psicologico affine ai modi dell'expressionismo gotico tedesco, fu eseguito dal Maestro nel periodo tardo della sua attiuita'.

The angel holding the Crown of Thorns in the present painting shows the influence of Giambattista Tiepolo, who was Francesco Guardi's brother-in-law
