cover 1c Blue type II (20), rich color, natural s.e. at L., used with 3c Dull Red (26), both well-tied by 'New-York Sep 2 186(1)' duplex pmk. on very fresh orange buff cover addressed to a U.S. Army Doctor at Fort Monroe, Va., ms. docketing on reverse confirms 1861 usage, since it carries 4c postage, the sender must have allotted 1c as a carrier fee (not so indicated) either in NYC or to get it to Ft. Monroe (by May of 1861 Virginia had seceded and hostilities soon isolated Ft. Monroe by the usual land routes), very fine and unusual, Scott retail $230.00+
