Lot Essay
Inscribed on the relining canvas 'Coypel taken for Esquire Gavin Hamilton at Home'
The present lot is derived from Hamilton's painting now in the Museo di Roma, Rome. That painting was formerly one of a series representing 'The Story of Paris', painted for the villa Borghese, Rome, in 1782-84. The companion ceiling paintings are still in situ. These paintings represent the artist's supreme achievement, and illustrate his final neoclassical style
