During his long stay in Spain (1923-1938), Lam's production is mainly distinguished by his sampling of the different vanguard styles, while still representing his own cultural heritage. This painting is a clear example of Cezanne's influence on the artist. Above all this is evident in Lam's interest in that which is closest to him. Independently from the place it represents, there is no doubt that the memory of his native land is the source of his inspiration. The idylic and voluptuous surrounding depicted in warm and intense colors are reminiscent of his beloved Caribbean island. In a letter to his mother, dated February 8 1932, Lam expresses his deep longing... "P.D. Estas Cuatro lineas: Recuerdo a todos. Yo necesito que me escriban todos, que yo nunca olvido y recuerdo siempre con alegría aquellos días mios cuando pequeño en Sagua. El estero, el colegio, la calle real, a Elvira y los Picazo, la empresa y todos los hermanos mios, el rio y madre, a Ud. como voy a olvidarla"
