Summit meetings between Reagan and Gorbachev took place in Geneva in November 1985 and in Iceland the following year; on Gorbachev's 1988 visit he promised an unprecedented unilateral reduction in Soviet arms and the withdrawal of troops from Eastern Europe and Afganistan.
