TROTSKY, LÉON, Russian revolutionary. Photograph inscribed (in English!) and signed ("Leon Trotsky"), Coyoacan, [Mexico], 28 October 1938. 191 x 126 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 15/16 in.), slight creases at bottom margin, but in very good condition. A striking, intense pose, head and part of shoulders, with a long inscription by Trotsky in bright blue ink occupying the lower right-hand portion of photograph and margin: "We are proud, my dear Antoinette, to have you in our ranks. You are a beautiful example of energy and devotion for our youth. I embrace you with the wish: long live Antoinette Konikow! Yours fraternally Leon Trotsky, 28.x.1938, Coyoacan." Trotsky, who had resided in Mexico after his banishment by Joseph Stalin, was assassinated by a Stalinist agent two years after this inscription. A rare photograph, particularly with such a lengthy inscription.
