Lot Essay
The earliest of the First Phase Chief's blankets show indigo stripes embellishing the dark brown stripes at the top, center, and bottom on a natural creamy white ground as can be seen here. Although of very simple conception, such weavings project both a sense of balance and subtle rhythmic variations which are achieved by the slightly differing values of the dye lots and the small divergencies within the weave itself. This fine example is very similar to one in the collections of the School of American Research in Santa Fe (Holstein and Erdimaw, 1979, p. 27, no. 35).
