In the form of an oystercatcher with long beak, cylindrical neck, segmented wings, the feet at the bottom, above them a large grimacing face, on the back of the bird the head of a mountain goat carved in relief, painted in red, black and white, the cylindrical handle with a brown patina, 13¼in. (33.6cm.) long

Such rattles were used exclusively by Tlingit shamans. The oystercatcher and the mountain goat represent powerful helping spirits.
