James Brade Sword was born in Philadelphia in 1839 and worked as a civil engineer. It was not until 1863 that he began his career as a professional artist and was known primarily as a portrait painter. He figured prominently in several professional artist's organizations in Philadelphia, where he later passed away in 1915.
