Lot Essay

During the first decade of the 20th century, MacMonnies tired of sculpture and turned to painting portraits. When he returned to sculpture, he concentrated on only those commisions which attracted his interest. The present unique portrait of Edith Gould, daughter of George J. Gould, was created circa 1911 shortly before the artist's permanent return to New York in 1914.
