Thomas Moran made the first of many western expeditions with F.V. Hayden's government expedition to Yellowstone in 1871-72, and followed this in the 70s with almost yearly trips to the Colorado River, Yosemite & the Tetons. The present picture is a view Moran first encountered on this trip of the Hot Spring of Gardener's River in the Yellowstone.
