Lot Essay

The figure of Dancing Nude was conceived at the same time as Lachaise's first attempt at the monumental work Elevation. Although the present model still relates to the sculptor's earlier efforts of capturing the figure in motion, the regularly shaped base and the identifiable hairstyle and body type indicate Lachaise's transition to a more static type of female figure.

Only two other examples of Dancing Nude are known, that in the Los Angeles County Museum exhibition and one in a private collection, New York. The highly finished surface and the provenance make this example an important addition to the artist's ouevre.
