Lot Essay

Conceived in 1936, Pioneer Family Group was entered in a competition in Dallas in 1937 and Zorach was awarded first mention by the judges. However, the public was outraged due to the nudity of the group and the prize was given to another sculptor. The plaster model is illustrated in a photograph taken of the sculptor in his studio (Wingert, cover illus.). Also known as Memorial to the Pioneer Woman, two monumental bronze casts were commissioned in 1963.
