A member of the Japan Art Academy and a priest of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, Bundo followed the traditions of classical Japanese calligraphy, eschewing what he called avant garde "image inking." In 1957 he wrote "...traditional calligraphy is... based on the use of legible characters and devoted to the delicate beauty and grace in the arrangmement of meaningful characters which has undergone centuries of refinement."
