AN INLAID CELADON COSMETIC BOX WITH COVER
KORYO DYNASTY (SECOND HALF 12TH CENTURY)
The circular box inlaid in black and white slip on the slanted side rising from the flat base with a band of contiguous leaves enclosing a set of triple discs and framed by white slip, this band below two narrower friezes of fretwork and matching black and white discs; the domed cover with wide, flat top also inlaid in black and white with narrow bands of fretwork and discs above the rim and on the rounded sides with adjacent leaves enclosing a single chrysanthemum floret and similarly framed by a silhouette of white slip, the flat top of the cover inlaid with a large chrysanthemum medallion centered by two confronted phoenixes and two confronted clouds within a band of conjoined black and white rings, the lower section of the box and the cover covered overall by a light green celadon glaze, crystalline and emerald in places and with sparse, large crackle; incised double circle on base within three spur marks- 3 5/8 in. (9.2 cm.) diameter, inner rim chips lower section
