Lot Essay

Seligman notes that this painting is related to a study in a sketchbook which the artist drew during a bicycle tour of Brittany in June, 1909. The painting was probably done in the studio after the artist returned to Paris. The dominant influence on de la Fresnaye's painting at this time is that of Gauguin and the Nabis, especially Paul Seruisier, whom de la Fresnaye met during his trip. "Original and sensitive these Brittany landscapes with their 'rounded forms, their lovely pinks and lush greens, are full of youthful emotion and are the most personal in style of the early works" (G. Seligman, op. cit., 1969, p. 15)
