Entitled by the artist at the beginning of the painting and with one seal: Shi Shi Dao Ren
Inscribed at the end of the painting: "When painting handscrolls, the ancient masters were always thoughtful and profound. They might spend five days to paint a mountain and ten days for a stream. A handscroll might not be completed in less than a year. Therefore, their works were masterful and unusual. Huang Gongwang's handscroll of Fu Chun Mountains is one such example. Mr. Liu Zhuen is an excellent chess player, whose skill I admired greatly, and he likes my paintings as well. Mr. Liu came to visit frequently since mid-autumn, and brilliantly explained to me the methods of chess playing. I, on the other hand, have a good understanding of painting. I spent more than a month to finish this handscroll in a rather free style. Without sufficient concentrated study, how can I hope to enter the doorway of the masters? I have only done this at the request of my friend."
Dated the third day of the tneth month of jiashen year of the Kangxi era (1704)
Three seals of the artist: Wang Yuan Qi Yin, Lu Tai, Yu Shu Hua Tu Liu Yu Ren Kan
Fourteen collectors' seals, including six of Wu Hufan (1894-1968)
Five colophons by Wu Hufan, two dated 1951
